Rognon Photo Challenge

Project Background

During the Winter 2025 semester of Digital Imaging, professor James Rognon challenged his students to post a photo every day. His three incentives in extending this challenge to us included extra credit, photography practice, and portfolio pieces. View my photographs here.

Goals For the Project

  • Learn photography
  • Gain portfolio pieces
  • Most importantly, have fun!

Project Journey

Honestly, the beginning of the semester was rough. I had never used a camera before and was expected to take photos every day. I wondered how I could even manage to take a photo every day. How could I remember to do this?

Then I start messing with the camera. I instantly fell in love with this new-found hobby. I humbly admit that I fell victim to the “beginner photographer ego.” I genuinely thought the photos I shot were the best photos ever. Then as the semester gone by, I improved in composition, exposure triangle understanding, and overall photography skills. During the journey, I decided to start shooting in manual mode. I felt my understanding of the exposure triangle would be better when I manually mess around with what aperture, shutter speed, and ISO does.

Dare I say… this was the best decision I made in my photography journey. I feel my photos look better now that I am confident in manual mode. I still love aperture mode and shutter mode, but manual mode has something in my heart.

Growth and Outcomes

The Rognon Photo Challenge has sparked a flame in my interest in photography. I absolutely love it. This project/challenge has helped me grow in my photography and creative skills. It was fun to see how my photography style was being developed throughout the semester. Check out my photographs here.

I now own a Canon EOS RP with a RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM lens.
