BYU-Idaho Scroll

Project In a Nutshell

Across two semesters, I served as a journalist and a Social Media Strategist for BYU-Idaho Scroll. I published ten stories across Instagram and YouTube covering business, student events, and construction around Rexburg, Idaho. As a Social Media Strategist, I assisted in increasing viewership, sending email newsletters, and mentored students.

Project Results

Project Journey

During the Fall 2025 semester at BYU-Idaho, I took Scroll’s practicum to gain practical experience in journalism. Even though I had little interest in being a journalist, I knew that I can learn skills transferable to marketing.

These skills include mass communication, videography, and content planning. On top of the skills I have learned, I applied my prior knowledge to create high performing short-form videos and learned what journalists do on a day-to-day basis.

Simply put, I have a higher respect for journalists because this was the most time consuming and difficult practicum I enrolled in. The stories I sought for and shared would become stories shared on Scroll’s actual news channels. Understanding this, I knew my stories had to bring value by educating, entertaining, and/or inspiring others to action.

As someone who always seeks new activities to do, most of my videos were community-focused events and construction. My best performing video shared the story of Fire & Fizz, the pottery painting studio featuring a soda bar. New companies are always exciting to share, but this was different than the typical soda shop or food service.

After the semester of being a journalist concluded, I was offered a position as staff to help in the social media strategy.

This role included email newsletter, social media, and research. Outside of the main roles, I volunteered to mentor students alongside one of my coworkers to help lighten her load.

Now that I would not share stories, I strictly focused on behind the scenes. I analyzed the best performing stories based off the desks for each social platform. I focused on metrics such as reach, average watch time, and shares. These helped most to see if the stories are reaching people, actual consumption of news, and the discussions they could be bringing among our audience.

The results of my work as a Social Media Strategist for Scroll included a rework on the Viking Update, assisting in Scroll reaching 10k followers, and content ideation for awareness.
